#PuppyNation Attracts Millions to Engage with Service Dogs

Entered in Non-Profit

Objective

Canine Companions invented the modern service dog category 50 years ago when we trained a labrador named “Abdul” in 1975. Since then, we have raised and trained 8,800 service dogs to assist children, adults, and veterans with disabilities. We provide these dogs completely free of charge to recipients, which means our operations are 100% funded via donations and grants, and we rely heavily on volunteers.

Our goal for our 50th anniversary year was to increase our relevance among the up-and-coming GenZ and Millennial generations of volunteers and donors who will shape our organization for the next 50 years. This meant creating a memorable and sharable way to communicate our mission and take it out ‘on the road’ to reach new audiences. We dubbed our initiative #PuppyNation, and our specific objectives included:

1) Engage GenZ and Millennial viewers to become familiar with Canine Companions’ mission;

2) Attract media to educate audiences about the process of raising & training service dogs;

3) Inspire volunteers to sign up to help raise puppies;

4) Expand our newsletter subscribers & target donor base.

Moreover, we wanted the 50th anniversary efforts to be repeatable in subsequent years, affordable to implement for a non-profit, and highly sharable via social media for scale.

Strategy

Our strategy was to bring to life Canine Companions’ noble mission with a concentrated and branded activation that would be extremely memorable and able to compete toe-to-toe with more well-funded campaigns to rise above the noise. The #PuppyNation brand umbrella was chosen to be an inclusive call to action and social media-friendly hashtag (#puppynation) to promote viral sharing. The inaugural activation was designed to take the Canine Companions’ mission out into the physical community via a week-long schedule of highly visible and accessible events hosted at college campuses, coffee shops, bookstores, corporate lobbies, and other gatherings that engaged our GenZ and Millennial audience targets.

We anchored our week-long #PuppyNation activation dates around National Puppy Day (March 23rd) to underscore Canine Companions’ nation-wide scope, and we leveraged the existing online traffic generated by our popular “Puppy Cam” live-stream that Canine Companions hosts for a week each year (because who can resist cute puppies?). The Puppy Cam features the daily antics of a litter of adorable, 7-week-old Canine Companions puppies born to become service dogs. Special guests join the puppies each day to share up-close moments and ways the public can get involved in the Canine Companions mission.

We united the week-long Puppy Cam with the series of in-person events, all under the #PuppyNation brand to cross-fertilize and compound event turnout.

We designed the March campaign as a pilot to determine if the #PuppyNation concept was strong enough to become a regular, ‘signature’ activation of the Canine Companions brand. Some of the interesting implementation and operational details included:

As a nonprofit that scrutinizes every expenditure, our challenge was to create an affordable yet very memorable event that audiences look forward to each year, and that motivates volunteers and potential donors to act. We leveraged existing organizational infrastructure and assets as much as possible to minimize extra implementation budgets. The #PuppyNation activation also functions as a glue and unifying element that connects many of Canine Companions’ existing events and activities.

Results

Our week-long #PuppyNation activation in March 2026 exceeded our overall expectations by generating nearly a half-billion media impressions. Achievement of our specific goals to attract volunteers, drive newsletter signups, and reach GenZ/Millennial audiences also exceeded expectations:

1) 457,757,158 total press impressions in top-tier national & regional publications

2) 40+ television news segments reaching ~1 million viewers (see highlights video)

3) 471% increase in volunteer newsletter requests

4) 90,249 social media impressions with 21% coming from GenZ / Millennial audiences

5) Involved nearly 100 volunteers coordinating events nationwide during #PuppyNation week

The already-popular Puppy Cam live-stream event experienced a 137% increase in first-time visitors and drew 363,474 site visitors overall.
