“Power in Community” (Director’s Cut)

Entered in Environment & Sustainability

Objective

Solar United Neighbors (SUN) exists to help people and communities realize the economic, environmental, and social benefits of going solar. The challenge wasn't explaining the science of solar energy. It was helping audiences understand why it matters.

Bond Studio partnered with SUN to create Power in Community, a documentary that tells the story of solar through the people whose lives have been transformed by it. Rather than producing a traditional organizational film, we set out to create a story that reflected SUN's belief that meaningful change begins with neighbors building together.

The film was designed to support several objectives. First, it needed to increase awareness of SUN's mission by making the organization's impact tangible through real experiences rather than statistics. Second, it aimed to strengthen trust by highlighting the relationships, collaboration, and community leadership at the center of SUN's work. Finally, it served as a storytelling asset that could inspire viewers to engage, whether by joining a solar co-op, supporting advocacy efforts, subscribing for updates, or making a donation.

At its core, Power in Community reframed the conversation around solar energy. Instead of positioning solar as a product or technology, the film presents it as a tool that helps communities build resilience, expand access, and create opportunities for one another. By putting people at the center of the story, the project demonstrates that the true power of solar lies in the communities that make it possible.

Strategy

From the beginning, our approach reflected SUN's mission: relationships come first.

Rather than beginning with production logistics, we began by listening. Working closely with SUN's communications team, we identified homeowners, community leaders, organizers, and advocates whose stories represented different communities, geographies, and lived experiences. Through conversations and pre-interviews, we focused less on collecting quotes and more on understanding what solar had changed in each person's life. Those insights shaped every creative decision that followed, from interview direction and visual storytelling to the overall narrative structure.

Production took us across West Virginia, Texas, Washington, DC, and Pennsylvania, capturing communities connected by a shared belief that collective action creates lasting change. Each location offered a different perspective on solar adoption, yet revealed common themes of resilience, empowerment, affordability, and neighborhood collaboration.

Our filmmaking approach prioritized authenticity over messaging. Interviews remained conversational rather than scripted, creating space for participants to tell their own stories in their own words. We paired those interviews with observational documentary footage that captured everyday moments – families at home, neighbors connecting, community gatherings, and the places where these stories naturally unfolded. Solar infrastructure remained an important visual element, but it was never treated as the main character. The focus stayed on the people whose lives it supported.

The greatest creative challenge came in post-production. With dozens of hours of interviews spanning multiple states and perspectives, the task was to build a cohesive narrative without reducing individual experiences to a single message. The final edit balances intimate personal stories with the broader impact of SUN's national work, allowing each participant to contribute to a larger narrative about community-driven change.

Careful pacing, music, sound design, and color finishing reinforced the documentary's emotional tone while maintaining credibility and restraint. Accessibility features, including captions and transcripts, ensured the film could reach broad audiences across SUN's communications channels.

What distinguishes Power in Community is that it doesn't ask audiences to believe in solar because of technology or policy. It invites them to believe in the people who are creating change together. By aligning our production process with the same community-centered values that define SUN's work, the film became an authentic reflection of the organization itself.

Results

Power in Community became a cornerstone storytelling asset for Solar United Neighbors, successfully advancing the organization's awareness and audience growth objectives across paid, owned, and organic channels. Beyond campaign performance, the documentary provided SUN with an evergreen storytelling resource that continues to support presentations, fundraising, advocacy, partnerships, and community outreach. By shifting the conversation from technology to people, Power in Community helped audiences connect more deeply with SUN's mission while demonstrating the effectiveness of authentic, community-centered storytelling. Led by 2024 Shorty Impact Producer of the Year Kyra Knox, this project has also earned industry recognition, including a Silver and Bronze Telly Award, further validating its creative and social impact.
