Julie Walsh Smith is the CEO at Complexly, the studio behind some of the world’s top educational YouTube channels like Crash Course and SciShow. Complexly was founded in 2012 by longtime creators John Green and Hank Green, who just recently donated the company to the public by converting it to a nonprofit. At over 32 million YouTube subscribers and over 5.5 billion views, Complexly is one of the world’s largest educational producers. It serves its social good mission at a global scale, guided by the idea that curiosity builds understanding, and understanding builds a better world. Julie has been CEO at Complexly since 2023, seeing the organization through revenue and headcount expansion, new IP, and the re-launch of Complexly as a nonprofit. This comes after several years as COO and supporting various Hank Green projects, including VidCon and Project for Awesome. Now in its 15th year, Julie is leading Complexly’s team of over 80 staff through its evolution from a creator business to a curiosity-driven media brand.
