NOWATCH

Entered in Responsible Technology

Objective

We are living through a quiet epidemic of disconnection from our bodies, our instincts, and what truly helps us feel and perform at our best. Despite the explosion of wearables, health data, and self-tracking tools, people still aren't getting the big picture. NOWATCH was built on the belief that what is missing is not more measurement, but understanding.

NOWATCH is a screen-free wearable designed to help people better understand how their body responds to stress, recovery, and everyday life.  We call it the world’s first Awareable because it was created not to drive performance or addiction, but to build awareness. Instead of pushing scores, streaks, or constant notifications, it turns physiological signals into insights people can actually use to better understand themselves.

From the beginning, we set out to do three things differently. First, translate over a decade of peer-reviewed psychophysiology research into two original metrics: stress frequency and stress recovery, making nervous system health measurable outside a lab. Second, prove that a consumer health product could be scientifically rigorous, beautifully designed, and ethically built. And finally, help shift the conversation around health technology away from over optimization and toward stress resilience, stress recovery, and self-awareness.

NOWATCH exists to close the growing gap between having data about ourselves and truly understanding what our bodies are trying to tell us.

Strategy

NOWATCH entered one of the most crowded spaces in consumer technology, a wearable market dominated by Apple, Fitbit, Garmin, and Oura, multi-million dollar brands with household name recognition, massive marketing budgets, and years of consumer trust. The obvious move would have been to compete on their terms with better sensors and slicker hardware but we chose to create something entirely new.

Our strategy was built on a single cultural insight: the wearable industry had optimised itself into a corner. It had become very good at measuring things and very bad at helping people actually understand themselves. Chief Science Officer Dr. Joana De Calheiros Velozo brought over a decade of peer-reviewed research in psychophysiology and stress response biomarkers, developing the Reactivity Monitor, a sensing platform that produces a high-resolution, minute-by-minute picture of how the body is responding to daily life.

One of our star health trackers, The NOWATCH B, helps users understand and recover from stress in real time while tracking three original metrics as the main focus: Stress Duration, Stress Recovery and Stress Frequency. These were not repackaged versions of what already existed, but were genuinely new ways of measuring your stress response and understanding if you're in a fight and flight state. NOWATCH’s products were designed to answer a question no other consumer device was asking: how resilient is your body?

The design followed the same philosophy because NOWATCH is intentionally screenless. There are no notifications engineered for re-engagement, no streaks built to create dependency, no subscription required to access your own health data. Every design decision was made to give something back to the user rather than take their attention.

Results

NOWATCH is categorically different from a smartwatch or fitness tracker. Unlike conventional wearables that surface performance scores and demand screen time from the wearer, NOWATCH Awareables run quietly in the background, passively monitoring the body’s stress response system and surfacing intelligence only when it matters.

Stress frequency, stress recovery and stress recovery, the three proprietary metrics developed by Chief Science Officer Dr. Joana De Calheiros Velozo, are original contributions to the field of digital health and developed in-house. Emerging from over a decade of peer-reviewed psychophysiology research, representing a new way of understanding nervous system health outside a clinical setting.
