ACE Demand Response Educational Video

Entered in Short Form Video

Objective

Demand response is one of the most effective tools utilities have for managing the electrical grid during peak usage, but most residential customers have never heard of it. The concept itself, voluntarily reducing energy consumption during high-demand periods to prevent grid strain, sounds abstract and technical. And abstract, technical things don't get people to act.

Atlantic City Electric needed educational content that could translate this invisible infrastructure benefit into something personal and tangible. The challenge: explain what demand response is, why it matters to the individual household, and how easy participation is, all within a short-form video format competing for attention alongside entertainment content on YouTube. The goal wasn't just views. It was comprehension and action, measured by whether viewers actually took the next step and visited ACE's enrollment page after watching.

Strategy

The video was produced as a short-form educational piece optimized for YouTube's paid placement environment. The creative approach prioritized clarity and relatability over technical precision, using visual storytelling and conversational language to make an invisible grid concept feel immediate and personal.

Rather than opening with utility jargon or engineering diagrams, the video framed demand response through the viewer's lived experience: what happens in their home during a heat wave, how their participation prevents the brownouts that affect their neighbors, and how simple it is to stay enrolled and make a difference.

The tone matched the broader Zoe campaign ecosystem, warm, confident, and never condescending, meeting viewers where they are rather than where the utility wishes they were. Pacing and hook timing were optimized for mobile-first behavior, respecting the reality that this content lives alongside music videos and comedy clips, not in a utility webinar.

Distribution was managed through ACE's digital media strategy to reach residential customers across New Jersey, with the call-to-action driving directly to ACE's Energy Wise Rewards enrollment page, keeping the path from education to participation as short as possible.

Results

The video launched in August 2026 and early performance data indicates the creative approach is working. In its first two weeks, the video generated 296 views and drove 21 visits to ACE's Energy Wise Rewards enrollment page, a 19% visit rate that demonstrates the content is doing more than generating passive impressions. Nearly one in five viewers took action.
