Eight To Glory Race

Entered in Event & Experiential, Special Project

Objective

HKJC wanted to create a cultural moment that would put Hong Kong horse racing into the global sports conversation during the 2026 World Cup.

The challenge was to connect two very different sporting worlds, world-class horse racing and international football, in a way that was immediate, entertaining and easy for audiences to understand, including people with little knowledge of either sport.

HKJC and creative agency Rebel Ventures set out to create a live experience that would:

The ambition was not simply to stage another race, but to make the track part of the World Cup narrative.

Strategy

On July 8, 2026, HKJC and Rebel Ventures brought the World Cup quarter-final stage to the track through a simple, high-concept live race: eight horses represented the eight quarter-finalist nations, with each horse carrying the colours of one country.

The idea created an intuitive bridge between football and horse racing. Audiences did not need specialist knowledge to understand the premise: eight nations, eight horses, one race. The format gave football fans a reason to care about the result while allowing HKJC to present its core sport, horse racing, in a fresh cultural context.

The race was staged as a live event at the Happy Valley Racecourse in Hong Kong, with the experience supported by social content, earned media, broadcasting, and a targeted creator collaboration.

Race day itself was elevated into a full event: a custom-made trophy, jockeys walking out carrying the flags of the nations they represented, pre-race social media teasers building anticipation, and an appearance from soccer legend Dimitar Berbatov, lending real football credibility to the activation.

The execution benefited from an extraordinary narrative development: the horse representing Spain won Eight to Glory, and Spain went on to win the 2026 World Cup two weeks later. The result transformed the race from a clever football-themed activation into an unexpected piece of sports folklore.

The project required HKJC’s team to secure support from the racing director and racing team, overcome the operational limitations of delivering a new concept within the racing environment, and translate the idea across live, social and media channels.

Results

Eight to Glory met its core objective of turning HKJC into part of the global football conversation.

The race attracted the largest attendance of HKJC’s summer season, with over 20,000 fans showing up, and generated more than 18 million social media views across channels and platforms. It also produced 1,012 organic and user-generated content pieces across Facebook, Instagram, X, YouTube and TikTok. It was also featured in 433’s Instagram, the world’s most-followed football social media account, reaching an audience of approximately 80 million followers.

The campaign secured seven global media stories with a combined reach of 70 million UVPM. In Spain, the story received both digital and broadcast coverage, including features on okDiario and Antena 3 (Spain’s most watched TV channel).

Most importantly, the campaign created a memorable, culturally resonant story: the Spain-coloured horse won the race, then Spain won the World Cup two weeks later. Eight to Glory successfully made horse racing accessible to football audiences while giving HKJC a distinctive and ownable moment during the world’s biggest sporting conversation.
