DC Superpowered Storytellers

Entered in Corporate Social Responsibility Campaign, Entertainment, Learning & Development

Objective

DC Superpowered Storytellers was created to address a critical challenge: while young people are surrounded by stories, too few have opportunities to see themselves as storytellers. Through a first-of-its-kind collaboration between Warner Bros. Discovery, DC, Discovery Education, and education partners, the initiative leverages the power of iconic DC characters and franchises to help students develop creativity, confidence, communication skills, and career awareness.

The program was designed to achieve three goals: expand access to high-quality creative learning experiences; empower students to find and share their own voice through storytelling; and introduce young people to the diverse careers behind the entertainment industry, from writing and illustration to animation, production, and archival preservation.

To achieve these objectives, DC Superpowered Storytellers provides free standards-aligned classroom resources, after-school activities, family engagement experiences, and The Superpower of Story Virtual Field Trip, which gives students unprecedented behind-the-scenes access to the people and processes that bring stories from page to screen. By transforming fans into creators, the program helps young people see storytelling not just as entertainment, but as a pathway to self-expression, learning, and future opportunities.

Strategy

A key challenge was creating an educational program that could authentically balance three priorities: delivering meaningful learning outcomes, remaining flexible for educators and community partners, and leveraging one of the world's most recognizable entertainment brands in a way that feels purposeful.

To address this, Warner Bros. Discovery, DC, Discovery Education, and nonprofit partners co-developed a scalable ecosystem of free resources that could be implemented across classrooms, after-school programs, and community organizations. Rather than relying on a single campaign moment, the initiative was designed as an always-on platform featuring standards-aligned storytelling lessons, hands-on creative activities, career exploration content, and immersive experiences that inspire students to create stories of their own.

What makes the program unique is its ability to connect education directly to the entertainment industry. Through The Superpower of Story Virtual Field Trip and other experiential components, students gain behind-the-scenes access to writers, artists, animators, archivists, and creatives responsible for bringing DC stories to life. The program transforms entertainment fandom into career exploration, helping students understand both the creative process and the opportunities available within it.

To keep the experience culturally relevant and continuously engaging, the initiative evolved alongside major DC franchise moments, including Superman, Supergirl, and Batman, introducing new educational content, themed activities, community events, and storytelling challenges throughout the year.

The result is a differentiated model that sits at the intersection of entertainment, education, and social impact, using world-class storytelling IP to help young people build creativity, confidence, literacy, and career awareness while creating the next generation of storytellers and creators.

Results

DC Superpowered Storytellers transformed a local pilot into a nationwide initiative that has reached more than 915,000 students through 3,400+ schools and youth-serving organizations across all 50 states, extending creative learning opportunities to communities that may otherwise have limited access to them.

The program's success is measured not only by its reach, but by its ability to inspire action. Educators consistently reported stronger student engagement, increased confidence, and greater willingness among students to share their ideas and perspectives. Many described the experience as transformative, noting that it helped students recognize the value of their own voice and creativity.

What sets DC Superpowered Storytellers apart is its ability to connect learning with aspiration. Through experiences like The Superpower of Story Virtual Field Trip and DC Studio Day, students gained unprecedented access to the writers, artists, designers, and creators behind some of the world's most recognizable stories. By revealing the creative careers behind beloved characters and franchises, the program helped students see pathways they had never previously considered.

Ultimately, DC Superpowered Storytellers demonstrates how entertainment can be leveraged as a force for education and social impact, inspiring hundreds of thousands of young people to see themselves not just as consumers of stories, but as storytellers, creators, and changemakers.
