8th Annual Shorty Award Categories

Shorty Awards In the News

Now in their eighth year, the Shorty Awards have made news for honoring content producers across all major social platforms; for entering the mainstream Hollywood awards cycle; for bringing on unique and exciting sponsors and partners to grow their own social media following; to give all influences a chance to succeed; and to honor work in important areas like the environment.

It’s time to start voting, and when Kendall Jenner’s nominated for a Best In Fashion Shorty Award you’re not really going to have to stress about who should get your vote. I mean, Jenner is pretty much a no brainer for the honor, after all. The Shorty Awards honor the best of social media, so considering this model has over 47 million followers, a social media campaign with Calvin Klein and is friends with all of the other top models (whose photos also flood her accounts) — she’s pretty much a shoo-in for the win.

The nominees for the 8th Annual Shorty Awards, recognizing the best content and influencers on social media, are in. In addition to including the usual social media platforms — Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Vine, Instagram and Tumblr — this year Periscope is being included for the first time.

Yesterday was an important day in social media. The Shorty Awards, which honor the best of social media by recognizing the influencers, brands, and organizations who excel on different platforms, just added the categories of "Periscope of the Year" and "YouNower of the Year" to its list. Found under the "Tech & Innovation" section, these new categories signal an incredibly rapid validation of the newest social platforms and hint at what's to come for those involved in live video.

No matter who is crowned this year, the presence of live-streaming — not just as one category but as two new sections named after two different companies — gives renewed legitimacy to not only the growing industry but also to the apps.

Who needs the Oscars when you have the Shortys? Today the nominees were announced to honor the best of the best on the Internet. People can vote once a day per category up until Feb. 18, when the winners are announced. This year, new categories Periscoper of the Year and YouNower of the Year were added to the long list of awards. Vine comedians, Best Snapchatter, and YouTube ensemble are just a few of the other categories.

Nominees for the 8th annual Shorty Awards — highlighting the best content across the social media landscape including Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, YouTube, Instagram, Vine and, for the first time, Periscope — are officially out, with Tom Hanks, Taraji P. Henson, Dwayne Johnson, Reese Witherspoon, Kevin Hart, Amy Schumer, Aziz Ansari, Cher, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Adele, Michael B. Jordan, Caitlyn Jenner and J.K. Rowling among this year's notables.

The Hollywood Reporter

Despite the name, the list of Shorty Awards nominees is impressively long. The growth of digital platforms has led to a glut of diverse stars who merit nominations for the annual social media awards.

Christian may not be One Direction, but in April he did get to travel to New York City for the Shorty Awards, which celebrate the best in social media. He was the youngest nominee in the Best Vine Comedian category.

On April 20 at the Times Center in New York City, the 7th Annual Shorty Awards honored the best of the best of social media, with this year’s host, actress and comedian Rachel Dratch, kicking off the evening with a hilarious video highlighting her training regimen to prepare for hosting duties.

If you were to assume the Shortys only honored selfie experts and dentist office live tweeters, you’d be wrong – the show paid special homage to quite a few social media stars who use their platform to create change. More Than Me CEO Katie Meyler – who was recently recognized as a TIME Person of the Year for her part in the fight against Ebola – won the Shorty for Activist, and the Gates Foundation won in the Charity category. Washington Post reporter Wesley Lowery took home the Journalist Shorty, for his work covering the unrest in Ferguson and ensuing controversies surrounding race and law enforcement. And climate change-focused journalistic collaboration Climate Desk won the award for Green.

The overall energy was youthful, optimistic and upbeat about how we can change the world with the tips of our fingers. It's pretty amazing.
