Learn More about Tony Tiger
I'm a 13 year old tiger used as a roadside attraction at a truck stop in Louisiana. Despite court rulings prohibiting the Louisiana Dept. of Wildlife and Fisheries from issuing any further permits, I continue to be kept at the truck stop without a permit due to appeals and a lawsuit my owner has against the state. I'm just one of the estimated 5,000 plus tigers privately owned in the United States who outnumber tigers left in the wild - est. at 3,200. Sadly we’re used and exploited in roadside zoos, circuses, photo and feeding ops, pay-for-play schemes and kept as "pets.”
How do you or your organization use social media? What makes your use unique?
Animals need a voice and I found mine by tweeting. People not only learn about me, but about the serious problem of captive tigers and big cats in the U.S. I tweet ways you can help us by signing petitions, supporting legislation like the Big Cats and Public Safety Protection Act which seeks to end private ownerships of tigers and big cats in the U.S. You can help support this bill by asking your reps to co-sponsor it. Lucy was taken as a baby from her family in 1977 and put in a cold zoo. People are trying to have Lucy moved to an elephant sanctuary. Social media helps network our stories to all over the world and builds stronger support and awareness for us.
