NBC News’ social accounts deliver the best in breaking news, real-time updates, original journalism, captivating photos, and opinions and commentary.In 2013, NBC News leveraged social media to showcase news by driving the conversation and highlighting audience’s voices. When Congress shut down in October, NBC News launched the hashtag #DearCongress to allow the public to share their reactions and messages to congressional leaders. The hashtag generated an overwhelming response, with over 30K mentions in the first day, illustrating the nation’s frustration with Congress for failing to reach a compromise. NBC News also launched social media campaigns to commemorate historical milestones in 2013, including the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King’s March on Washington, the 50th anniversary of the death of JFK, and the passing of Nelson Mandela. For the anniversary of MLK, NBC News launched the hashtag #DreamDay asking audiences to share their dreams for the nation, generating mentions from world leaders, political figures, news anchors, and Americans across the country. The responses - a combination of texts, photos, and videos - were curated into a collection on RebelMouse, and Storified for digital posts on NBCNews.com. NBC News continues to be a primary resource during breaking news during crises, including the Boston Marathon bombings in April 2013. As NBC News correspondent Pete Williams provided live coverage from the scene, NBC News social teams coordinated with editorial teams to disseminate verified information across social platforms. The hashtag #TrustInPete began trending, exemplifying NBC News’ position as the go-to source during breaking news. The homepage of NBCNews.com features a continuous stream of social media updates, showing the evolution of news consumption in different forms, including tweets and photos. NBC News’ social accounts reach over 12 million followers across platforms, reinforcing its position as a leader in news.
