About this entry

In 2013, CNN continued as the worldwide leader in news and information on every platform and every connected device that a user carries. With the launch of new programming like New Day and The Lead with Jake Tapper, the return of classics like, Crossfire, news events like The President’s State of The Union Address, in addition to introducing the world to a killer whale named, Tilikum in CNN Films’ Blackfish; CNN invited its users to engage, participate and weigh in via social media, while they watched CNN programming. CNN Worldwide ended the year again as the number one news organization on Twitter with 41 million followers across all branded accounts (@CNN with almost 12 million followers; @CNNbrk with 15 million.) On Facebook, the network garnered more than 18 million fans across branded Facebook pages (the flagship CNN Facebook page with over 9.3 million fans.) Additionally, in 2013, CNN earned more social mentions for major breaking news events than any other news organization and maintained its position as the most social brand in the world. Throughout the year, CNN on-air talent, digital and social producers engaged the network’s audiences on television and online by consistently inviting users to use hashtags on Twitter and ‘in a first for a television news program,’ Crossfire asked viewers to vote in real-time by using PopTip. On Facebook, producers, directors and filmmakers conversed with Facebook users in chats about the network's programming around the premiere of CNN documentaries and films, in addition to CNN producers curating the ongoing social conversation during breaking news and special events in blogs powered by Scribble Live. Finally, CNN shows like AC360, took viewers behind-the-scenes by launching show Vine accounts. Other social efforts throughout the year included: Obama’s Inauguration - In The Crowd CNN and Instagram teamed up to offer a look into the crowds that gathered for the President's 2013 inaugural ceremonies. CNN asked Inaugural attendees to snap a photo of themselves ‘in the crowd’ and post to Instagram with the hashtag #CNN. Users were encouraged to share the personal details of why they made the trip, and then the photos were displayed in an interactive visualization for CNN Digital, with the best entries appearing in a global slideshow on CNN Television. Tweet of the Union For the President’s State of the Union address, the network created a “Tweet of the Union" database, which allowed users to track the conversation among members of congress in real time, in addition to filtering the conversation among demographic and editorial storylines. Viewers could follow the conversation at CNN.com/tweetoftheunion and add their own spin on the president’s speech via Twitter by using the hashtag #tweetoftheunion. Scribble Live CNN curated the social conversation online by using Scribble Live. During CNN Films presentations like: Our Nixon, Blackfish and the network’s special coverage, the social conversation featured highlights from the ongoing debate, videos, articles and images powered by Scribble provided a real-time look at the highlights. Poptip CNN offered viewers the ability to participate in the daily debate by “voting" in real-time by using Poptip. For the return of Crossfire, the network’s classic debate show, users could vote in real time via Poptip Technology, which tallied the votes from the program’s daily debate question. Near the end of the show, hosts Newt Gingrich, Stephanie Cutter, Van Jones or S.E. Cupp reveal the results later in the program. Kate Bolduan Instagram Challenges 2013 CNN debuted its new morning show, New Day in 2013. Throughout 2013, co-host Kate Bolduan, hosted nine Instagram challenges (with the audience's help) that received thousands of submissions from all around the world.
