FIRST DAY FEARS

Gold Honor in Non-Profit

Objectives

No child should be afraid to go to school. Yet for many students around the world, school is a terrifying place. Violence in schools - from bullying to sexual harassment and corporal punishment - is sadly common enough to feel inevitable.

1 in 3 students experience bullying.

Half the world's teens experience peer violence in and around school.

Around 720 million live in countries where corporal punishment is a reality.

This video launched our campaign to end violence in schools. Violence should not be an every day lesson for children.

Violence in schools can have serious long-term consequences on children's lives.

Through our campaign we are asked students, parents and teachers to take action by demanding environments where children can feel safe at school, in the community and online.

Classroom by classroom, school by school, country by country, we can #EndViolence in Schools

Strategy and Execution

We created a video that every child and parent could relate to. The scenarios in the video start with innocent questions from children expressing their nervousness about the first day of school to more darker, terrifying kinds of violence that are sadly becoming the every day reality for too many children around the world.

The signature video moved our audiences to share their own experiences with violence in and around schools, and even offer solutions.

Results

The video saw deep engagement on our global social media channels. It had over 4 million organic views on our Facebook page alone.

It was also a key asset that helped us launched our most successful global poll to date where we asked children and young people to share their experiences with violence in and around schools - both online and offline. In just 10 days, we had received over a million responses representing 160 countries.
