The Shorty Interview
with Virginia State Parks
What's your best tweet?
The one today - Hey friends! We're a finalist in the Shorty Awards!
What are six things you could never do without?
Love, friends, purpose, nature, books, art
How do you use Twitter in your professional life?
Updates on programs, events, facilities and issues on Virginia State Parks and share info on outdoor rec, nature and the environment.
What's your favorite Twitter app?
Twitterfeed. Twitterfeed has enabled us to tweets our events and blog postings with little effort.
Twitter or Facebook?
Twitter. We use Facebook too but Twitter always seems so much in the moment and I don't feel like I have to be friends with all followers.
What feature should Twitter add?
A way to store historical tweets
Who do you wish had a Twitter feed but doesn't?
My husband. I enjoy Twitter so much but he just doesn't get it.
What are some words or phrases you refuse to shorten for brevity?
Generally I only use 1, 2, 4 & anything else risks misunderstanding. I'd rather remove punctuation and unnecessary words.
Is there someone you want to follow you who doesn't already? If so, who?
I'd like all Twitter users in Virginia to follow me so they will be more aware and supportive of their state parks,
Have you ever unfollowed someone? Who and why?
Spammers who send repetitive DMs; porn accounts I didn't recognize as such when I followed them
Why should we vote for you?
I do a great job interacting with my followers and letting them know about our parks and this is on top of my regular full time job.
Terms you wish would start trending on Twitter right now?
Playoutdoors and nature - we are committed to getting more people to enjoy the benefits of outdoor recreation
What's the most interesting connection you've made through Twitter?
@EpicChange and @MamaLucy and her school, through the #tweetsgiving campaign
Hashtag you created that you wish everyone used?
I created #vastateparks for a contest but it since I like to use every one of my 140 characters, I don't even use it much!
How do you make your tweets unique?
I tweet a lot about what Va State Parks are up to but work hard to just as often tweet on broader topics and relate to my followers
What inspires you to tweet?
The excitement of reaching more people to talk about our state parks. I really believe in what we do!
Ever get called out for tweeting too much?
Yes. We tweet all our events ten days out in 5 tweet chunks. It can be bad in the summer. I try to make up for it with personal tweets.
140 characters of advice for a new user?
Be generous. Be yourself. Fill out your profile and craft a few tweets before starting to follow other users. ENGAGE
How long can you go without a tweet?
Less than a day. Sometimes I travel to parts of the state with poor cell service and have to go longer but I get cranky.
What question are we not asking here that we should?
How do you juggle your personality and your Twitter brand? - I guess that only applies to folks like me who tweet for an organization.
Who do you admire most for his or her use of Twitter?
@RayBeckerman for sharing information on a wide variety of topics with his followers
Why'd you start tweeting?
To show we are less an organization and more a group of committed staff who love and protect parks for the enjoyment of all.
Has Twitter changed your life? If yes, how?
Yes - I have met wonderful people and learned a lot about issues I care about.
What do you wish people would do more of on Twitter?
Complete their profiles! I like to know something about people I follow and I try to follow everyone back.
How will the world change in the next year?
The recession will continue to drive us toward what we find necessary in our lives and less over consumption.
What are some big Twitter faux pas?
My big pet peeve is accounts who follow only a small percentage of their followers. Twitter is a dialog not a one way stream.
What will the world be like 10 years from now?
We're at a junction-we either embrace social responsibility or become totally selfish. As an optimist I see great strides in humanitarianism.
