The Shorty Interview
with ShortFormBlog
What's your best tweet?
Any tweet that corrects the record and informs people of the truth.
What are six things you could never do without?
Twitter, Tumblr, MacBooks, iPhones, Water, Air.
How do you use Twitter in your professional life?
Every way possible; we work hard to curate relationships with other journalists and for researching stories and blog posts.
What's your favorite Twitter app?
Buffer. Saves me so much grief in organizing tweets. Also a big fan of EchoFon and the iPad version of Twitter.
Twitter or Facebook?
What was the funniest trend you've seen?
#GOP90sBands was pretty great — our entry was "10000 Cainiacs."
What feature should Twitter add?
A better search platform so that real-time news is easier to track.
Who do you wish had a Twitter feed but doesn't?
NBC's Brian Williams, better known as BriWi and the world's most famous Lana Del Rey hater.
What are some words or phrases you refuse to shorten for brevity?
None of the above. The sign of a good editor is to know that anything can cut for space.
Is there someone you want to follow you who doesn't already? If so, who?
It'd be kinda great if Barack Obama followed us on Twitter. He already does on Tumblr, but there's a chance to make it go both ways!
Have you ever unfollowed someone? Who and why?
No, but if we did, do you think we'd tell you?
Why should we vote for you?
We'd like to think that we do something truly unique with the Tumblr platform — and helped define what a good Tumblr can be.
Terms you wish would start trending on Twitter right now?
If only animated GIFs could become trending topics. We know more than a few that'd fit the bill.
What's the most interesting connection you've made through Twitter?
We once got into a fight with the Smashing Pumpkins fan club on Twitter. It was very much worth it.
Hashtag you created that you wish everyone used?
#DemosNotMemos: Do things; don't talk about them.
How do you make your tweets unique?
We add little jokes to each news tweet … we lay the puns on thick. The goal is building an emotional reaction.
What inspires you to tweet?
Important news and people who need to know about it.
Ever get called out for tweeting too much?
Not too much — though we've gotten that kind of thing on Tumblr before, which focuses on incremental updates.
140 characters of advice for a new user?
Tweet calm and follow on.
How long can you go without a tweet?
I can go a few hours; I don't try to do it all the time, but get antsy when it's been too long. Having a good flow is important.
What question are we not asking here that we should?
Why is every question about Twitter and not Tumblr? We <3 Tumblr. It's like the best thing ever.
How do you imagine Twitter changing?
It'll become more of a fact of life for journalists. They'll use it for more than promoting content — it'll turn from novelty into necessity.
Who do you admire most for his or her use of Twitter?
@ProducerMatthew — he really did a great job building an effective persona from scratch. My mind is blown from what he's done.
Who is the funniest person on Twitter that you follow?
There's this guy, @stefanjbecket, who basically kills at funny political tweets. When we grow up, we wanna be him.
What is one of the biggest misconceptions of Twitter?
That everyone talks about how awesome their sandwich is.
Why should people follow you?
Because by reading a little, you'll learn a lot. Basically, the tagline doesn't lie.
Can you name some one-of-a-kind Twitter accounts that you follow?
My personal favorite is @ProducerMatthew, and @horse_ebooks is inspiring in another way entirely.
How do you decide what to tweet?
It's gotta spark some emotion in the head. The best is a relative clean slate you can build from.
Why'd you start tweeting?
Because we wanted everyone to know how good this sandwich was.
Has Twitter changed your life? If yes, how?
It's gotten us a lot of attention and readers we might've never had otherwise — and expanded how we can parse info. It rules.
What do you wish people would do more of on Twitter?
Interact. Too much promoting, not enough replying. Also, they should remove the line "social media expert" from their profiles.
How will the world change in the next year?
Social activism will become more widespread via Twitter and Tumblr. We're already seeing it with Change.org and Rush Limbaugh.
What are some big Twitter faux pas?
Following, sending a DM, then unfollowing. You gotta turn in your "Social Media"card if you do that.
What will the world be like 10 years from now?
More interconnected and shorter. All jobs will be like using Pinterest. You can quote us on this.
