The Shorty Interview
with Thembisa S. Mshaka
What's your best tweet?
The one got the most retweets!
What are six things you could never do without?
Family, words, travel, film, music, Haagen Dazs.
How do you use Twitter in your professional life?
As a tool to connect with readers, build my network, and make a difference by mentoring career women with a passion for entertainment.
What's your favorite Twitter app?
Twitter or Facebook?
What was the funniest trend you've seen?
#MichaelEricDysonBookTitles. Playfully jabbed his loquacious, incendiary, run-on titles. Hilarious!
What feature should Twitter add?
The ability to DM multiple users at once! This would help me tremendously. Thanks for asking!
What are some words or phrases you refuse to shorten for brevity?
Dreams, author, recognize...I'm sure if I keep tweeting I'll discover more!
Is there someone you want to follow you who doesn't already? If so, who?
The people on Twitter who knew me from past lives in the industry, (school friends, DJs, recording artists I worked with). That'd be fun.
Have you ever unfollowed someone? Who and why?
Sure; anyone who isn't tweeting regularly or in a compelling way--or does so only for self-promotion. #epicFAIL!
Why should we vote for you?
My 'followers' are really co-leaders; Put Your Dreams First is more than a book on career mentorship--it's a movement for personal success.
Terms you wish would start trending on Twitter right now?
#HYeB #PutYourDreamsFirst #nokneepads (my mantra for career women) #Thembisa <--now my name, spelled properly, TRENDING?! That'd be wild! lol
What's the most interesting connection you've made through Twitter?
I'd have to say @jeffpulver. By meeting him, I was chosen to speak at #140conf London, the most amazing social media experience I've had yet.
Hashtag you created that you wish everyone used?
#nokneepads. I've seen it come back to me a few times, so I know it's just a matter of time before it gains traction.
How do you make your tweets unique?
By putting my spin on RTs, by sharing unique links, by acknowledging fellow tweeters, Twitpics. I tweet the way I speak; wordplay for days!
What inspires you to tweet?
My thoughts, imagination, how media covers entertainment as it relates to women and people of color, family, my readers, life itself!
Ever get called out for tweeting too much?
Thankfully no, but I was amped to reach the 10,000 Tweet mark recently! I can't handle jail of any kind, and that goes for Twitter jail too.
140 characters of advice for a new user?
People follow personalities. If you don't sparkle in real life, you won't here either. So live your best, wildest, fearless life, THEN share!
How long can you go without a tweet?
I never tested myself...most likely an hour tops!
What question are we not asking here that we should?
What would winning a Shorty Award mean for you?
Who do you admire most for his or her use of Twitter?
@wyclef. His use of Twitter around his music, performances, humanitarianism for Haiti--all dynamic and inspiring. He's a friend and follower!
Why'd you start tweeting?
Because I wanted to connect with people, share my book with them, and challenge my pith in the social media space. Sharpens me as a writer!
Has Twitter changed your life? If yes, how?
Absolutely, by connecting me w/readers in ways I never imagined beyond the 'author' moniker, including being a speaker at #140conf London!
What do you wish people would do more of on Twitter?
Actually follow people recommended to them on #FF. People w/tons of followers who follow less than 10 folks miss the point. Engage!
What are some big Twitter faux pas?
Too Much Information: scatalogy, bathroom activity, Twam (Twitter spam), blind RTing, bashing based on background. All #FAIL in my book.
What will the world be like 10 years from now?
It depends on how we treat the world right now. We need to show our planet and all its inhabitants the proper respect. Period.
