The Shorty Interview
with M.K. Hajdin
What's your best tweet?
The best one I got: I riffed on someone's pic, and jokingly gave him a twitter kiss and he laughed at my joke and returned the kiss. Magic.
What are six things you could never do without?
1) Rain 2) Green grass 3) Electric blanket 4) Computer 5) Critical thinking skills 6) Oxygen, I suppose
How do you use Twitter in your professional life?
I tweet pictures of my art and links to my blog. I follow people who like art and I hold baby penguins hostage until they follow me back.
What's your favorite Twitter app?
The one that lets you pick custom patterns and colors for your profile page - Colourlovers? It's like interior twitter design.
Twitter or Facebook?
Twitter. I'm not photogenic enough for Facebook. Not that good at lying about my life, either. And I like my privacy. Twitter is better.
What was the funniest trend you've seen?
I don't remember, so it couldn't have been that funny.
What feature should Twitter add?
The ability to temporarily muffle people you follow who are overtweeting without unfollowing them and causing them trauma.
Who do you wish had a Twitter feed but doesn't?
Alan Rickman. Roland Orzabal.
What are some words or phrases you refuse to shorten for brevity?
I try not to shorten words at all. I'll use "MT" and rephrase instead.
Is there someone you want to follow you who doesn't already? If so, who?
SFMOMA follows everybody in the world except me. Not that I'm bitter. Plus, all my childhood heroes with twitter accounts.
Have you ever unfollowed someone? Who and why?
Oh yes. Top reason: overtweeting. I dumped celebrities for not following. I dumped Mike Scott (@MickPuck) for being a rude snob.
Why should we vote for you?
Because my ancestors were pirates and I'm a hereditary outlaw. It's true!
Terms you wish would start trending on Twitter right now?
What's the most interesting connection you've made through Twitter?
A band I loved made one record in the 80s and then vanished. I found the singer on twitter, he was nice to me, and we're tweeps now.
Hashtag you created that you wish everyone used?
How do you make your tweets unique?
A dash of dreamy artiness with a punk's vocabulary and worldview. Shaken, not stirred.
What inspires you to tweet?
When I create something new, or see something that I just have to share.
Ever get called out for tweeting too much?
Never. I blame it on the cat.
140 characters of advice for a new user?
Be kind. RT and give credit (via @ source ) Learn #hashtags. Report spammers. Don't bother with celebrities: they seldom reply.
How long can you go without a tweet?
A day. Maybe. If I'm not at home. If I am at home, I start jonesing and have to fire up Tweetdeck.
What question are we not asking here that we should?
You already asked too many questions.
How do you imagine Twitter changing?
I don't. My imagination is overworked as it is.
Who do you admire most for his or her use of Twitter?
@patrickbaty has the most fascinating job and tweets about it in princely English. Delightful to read.
Who is the funniest person on Twitter that you follow?
@tartclub can talk like a pirate better than I can, but refuses to either marry me or join my pirate crew. I'll have to shanghai him.
What is one of the biggest misconceptions of Twitter?
It's only for celebrities and their stalkers, and all tweets are stultifyingly stupid.
Why should people follow you?
To see candid photos of former Yugoslav balconies, learn about Clyfford Still, look at my abstract art, and play with rude Valentine candy.
Can you name some one-of-a-kind Twitter accounts that you follow?
@Still_Museum is the only museum dedicated entirely to artist Clyfford Still.
How do you decide what to tweet?
Simple. If it pertains to me or what I do, I tweet it. Or if it's funny or beautiful.
Why'd you start tweeting?
I swore I never would. But I couldn't help myself. But I don't have some kind of problem. No! I can stop anytime I want!
Has Twitter changed your life? If yes, how?
It has brought me much joy, some frustration, and a whole lot of distraction.
What do you wish people would do more of on Twitter?
Interact genuinely. Too many marketers and spambots, too few folks who can write clearly and really want to connect.
How will the world change in the next year?
It'll be one year closer to being engulfed by the expanding sun. Who do I look like, Nostradamus?
What are some big Twitter faux pas?
Gibberish. Rudeness. Not crediting sources. Being a snob: not interacting with or following your followers. Being a jerk to fans.
What will the world be like 10 years from now?
It'll be 10 years closer to being engulfed by the expanding sun. And we still won't have flying cars.
