The Shorty Interview
with Jeff Gibbard
What's your best tweet?
Note to self: “Keep making art. Never stop.”
What are six things you could never do without?
My wife, my dogs, my iphone, hootsuite, twitter, skitch,
How do you use Twitter in your professional life?
I share industry (Social Media) information, syndicate my blog & make connections with people where there is a mutual benefit.
What's your favorite Twitter app?
Hootsuite. Final answer. No 2nd place.
Twitter or Facebook?
What was the funniest trend you've seen?
#predictingkanyetweets...by far. Absolutely hilarious. Also #sadpopsongs.
What feature should Twitter add?
Have new style retweets show up in mentions. Twitter should increase the character limit for DMs to 240. More: http://bit.ly/fMLg...
Who do you wish had a Twitter feed but doesn't?
Can't think of anyone. Those that don't must have a good reason, like Seth Godin or Steve Jobs.
What are some words or phrases you refuse to shorten for brevity?
I tend not to shorten anything but and (&) and in rare occasions you (u) or your/you're (ur). Everything else is as it is.
Is there someone you want to follow you who doesn't already? If so, who?
Brian Solis (@briansolis) because I respect the hell out of him, Kanye West (@kanyewest) because he follows 0 people, I'd be exclusive.
Have you ever unfollowed someone? Who and why?
I have unfollowed, not going to call anyone out. Why: spam, too self-promotional or selfish, or too political.
Why should we vote for you?
Because I'm not (yet) a "big dog" on Twitter. I don't have 100,000 followers, but I think I exemplify the true spirit of the medium.
Terms you wish would start trending on Twitter right now?
#callthemout to get back awesome twitter names not in use. #smphilanthropy to be one for those that give away their knowledge free of charge.
What's the most interesting connection you've made through Twitter?
Wow, that's a tough one. Tie between Tatiana Bacchus (@tbacchus20) and Mark Murnahan (@murnahan) but there have been SO many.
Hashtag you created that you wish everyone used?
#myfavoriteblogs and #jobfriday, I think they'd both be very valuable. Also #smphilanthropy
How do you make your tweets unique?
I don't really know. I don't really focus on being unique, just being me.
What inspires you to tweet?
Life. It's integrated into my everyday. I share my experiences, what I'm doing, what I'm watching, reading. Everything.
Ever get called out for tweeting too much?
Once or twice...I said "stop following me." This is all opt-in, if you opt-in, deal with it. Make a list, do some filtering.
140 characters of advice for a new user?
It may seem confusing at first. Be willing to embrace the chaos. Choose who you follow wisely. Listen. Interact. Be yourself.
How long can you go without a tweet?
24 hours...longer if I lose or forget my iPhone. On my honeymoon I went like 2 whole days, that was nuts!
What question are we not asking here that we should?
You're doing a great job. I've got nothing to add.
How do you imagine Twitter changing?
I think Twitter will get more focused over time as more people embrace it. If the "active" community grew it would be really exciting.
Who do you admire most for his or her use of Twitter?
I feel gross just for saying this but @justinbieber. It's uncanny, like mind control, instant trending topic madness.
Who is the funniest person on Twitter that you follow?
What is one of the biggest misconceptions of Twitter?
That it is all mindless drivel. People think its a giant stream of "what are you doing?" It's so much more.
Why should people follow you?
Because I'm generous with my time and experience. I actually engage in conversation and I'm a pretty funny guy at times.
Can you name some one-of-a-kind Twitter accounts that you follow?
I kind of think everyone is one of a kind. @redheadwriting is pretty unique though. @gloriabell might be the sweetest person on twitter.
How do you decide what to tweet?
Whatever makes sense to tweet at the time. At conferences its different than at my desk, different than at a restaurant, different than...
Why'd you start tweeting?
Someone told me about it, I tried it, I liked it...just kept doing it and kind of fell in love.
Has Twitter changed your life? If yes, how?
Absolutely. Twitter has connected me to brilliant people in ways never before possible. It's changed my perception of communication.
What do you wish people would do more of on Twitter?
Promote other people. I try to promote other people's work a lot.
How will the world change in the next year?
Slow, steady progress. Most are still warming up to the idea of all of this openness, especially companies. We'll see more case studies.
What are some big Twitter faux pas?
Auto DM, I was guilty at one time. Squatting on awesome usernames and not using them (#callthemout). Spamming trending topics.
What will the world be like 10 years from now?
Hopefully still here. More educated, more connected, more tolerant.
