The SupernaturalWiki was founded in August 2006 as a compendium for the CW TV series Supernatural and its fandom. The non-profit site is owned and run by fans and is visited over a million times a month by fans from nearly 200 countries. The Twitter account, run by Australian site admin Jules Wilkinson, was started in April 2009 and a Tumblr site followed in 2011.
A unique feature of the SuperWiki is that it includes entries about the fandom alongside those about the Show. A visit to the entry on Castiel provides canonical information as well as links to the actors charity activities, fan projects documenting Castiel's hair styles, fan fiction and people role playing the angel. It reflects the diversity of ways fans interact with show – and vice versa.
The Wiki is not only a resource, it is a site for fan creativity in itself. Any fan can add information to the site which means the content of the SuperWiki is as incredibly diverse and quirky as the fandom that creates it.
In what ways do you waste the most time on social media?
Watching slow moving pictures of pretty people on Tumblr.
How long can you go without a tweet?
I am tweeting right now.
How do you make your tweets unique?
My tweets are unique because I am the only 50 year old geeky red-haired Australian lesbian running a Supernatural Twitter account.
What's the wildest experience you've had via social media?
Having to review my tweets the next day to remember what I did at the Supernatural karaoke party in Vancouver in 2013. #twerking
How do you or your organization use social media? What makes your use unique?
@SuperWiki is integral in creating the community known as the "SPN Family". The SuperWiki is an amplifier for individual fans or other fansites – whether it's news about the Show, promoting fanworks or charity activities or connecting fans in their own corner of the world.
As fandom has become more diverse and dispersed the SuperWiki is a guidebook for those entering the fray of fandom. It documents what can be very dispersed or ephemeral events – such as fan reports from conventions, or using Storify to collect livetweets from the cast and crew during an episode. SuperWiki was the first to promote hashtagging to allow fans to follow live the shenanigans at conventions.
Supernatural is written by American geeky Gen X writers, and SuperWiki helps decode this for fans who from other cultures - and generations.
The SuperWiki is, essentially a fan. It is cheeky and provocative, full of obsession and passion for all aspects of Supernatural and its fandom.
