The Shorty Interview
with Kyell Gold
What's your best tweet?
I'm saving it for a special occasion.
What are six things you could never do without?
My husband, something to write with, something to write on, pizza, my library, my phone.
How do you use Twitter in your professional life?
I answer reader questions and talk about upcoming books. And existing books. And imaginary books. And gay rights.
What's your favorite Twitter app?
Twitter or Facebook?
Twitter. Every day of the week and twice on Sunday.
What was the funniest trend you've seen?
One letter off movie titles.
What feature should Twitter add?
Easier tracking of conversations.
Who do you wish had a Twitter feed but doesn't?
David Mitchell. The novelist.
What are some words or phrases you refuse to shorten for brevity?
For the right price, I'll shorten anything.
Is there someone you want to follow you who doesn't already? If so, who?
Everyone who doesn't already! Specifically, major publishers, though.
Have you ever unfollowed someone? Who and why?
I have unfollowed a couple people who retweeted too many tweets I wasn't interested in.
Why should we vote for you?
Because I write great books, give good advice, and use Twitter all the time.
Terms you wish would start trending on Twitter right now?
What's the most interesting connection you've made through Twitter?
A fan in southern California who came up to see me during a podcast. And brought a book as a gift!
Hashtag you created that you wish everyone used?
How do you make your tweets unique?
Each one is carefully crafted in a clean room with a snowflake embedded in it.
What inspires you to tweet?
Sometimes my thumbs get itchy and need a workout.
Ever get called out for tweeting too much?
140 characters of advice for a new user?
Think before you tweet. But not too hard.
How long can you go without a tweet?
I went four days over Christmas vacation when we were Internet-less. I think that's my record.
What question are we not asking here that we should?
"Do you tweet most from home, work, or out on the town?"
How do you imagine Twitter changing?
I think we'll see Tweets from fictional characters on TV shows or from live performers integrated into performances.
Who do you admire most for his or her use of Twitter?
@AlYankovic. He's funny and restrained.
Who is the funniest person on Twitter that you follow?
What is one of the biggest misconceptions of Twitter?
That it is nothing more than a waste of time (stated by many people who later joined).
Why should people follow you?
Because I don't tweet that often! And everyone should have more gay fox writers on their follow list.
Can you name some one-of-a-kind Twitter accounts that you follow?
@ItGetsBetter, an account for the charity project to help gay teens, and @neilhimself for his interesting life and perspective.
How do you decide what to tweet?
I think about whether it's something I would be interested in reading, and whether it's something I'd want hundreds of other people to read.
Why'd you start tweeting?
To be part of the conversations...
Has Twitter changed your life? If yes, how?
I feel like Twitter has put me more in touch with some of my friends, and put some fans more in touch with me. Connecting feels easier.
What do you wish people would do more of on Twitter?
Think before they press the "Tweet" button. Though technically that's not *on* Twitter...
How will the world change in the next year?
The landscape of pop music will be irrevocably altered when Stephen Colbert's first club track hits #1.
What are some big Twitter faux pas?
Misposting a direct message to your public account.
What will the world be like 10 years from now?
Much like it is today, only faster. Sadly, there will still be crappy 3-D movies.
