HCF - Wellness Apps (Be Happier, Get Fitter and Quit Smoking)

Entered in Corporate-Community, Public Health

Objectives

Insurance claims and preventable health problems are spiraling out of control. And who better placed than HCF, Australia's largest not-for-profit health fund, to change this disastrous community trend.

Be Happier: Life can be stressful, Be Happier gives users the tools to manage stress and boost their mental and emotional well-being through guided meditations, breathing exercises, daily positive affirmations, random acts of kindness and community support.

Get Fitter: Moving is important for staying fit and healthy. It isn't always easy to fit exercise into a busy life. This app has a range of simple and effective exercises that fit into users free time. Experienced personal trainers put them through their paces, demonstrating positions and movements. With three programs to choose from, there's something for anyone looking to easily add activity to their routine.

Quit Smoking: Deciding to quit is the first step to becoming smoke-free. This app is designed to help users take action and crack the addiction. Quit Smoking tracks their progress by calculating how long they've been smoke-free, and showing the positive impact quitting is having on their health and finances. They'll get tips for dealing with cravings and distractions when they strike.

This initiative celebrates healthy living and was created in an effort to encourage the community to take an active role in their health and well-being. HCF's goal is to reduce preventable health risks and the cost on society.

Strategy and Execution

HCF wanted to develop change behaviour digital solutions to provide their wider community with the tools to achieve a healthy lifestyle.

Way To Blue built a suite of 3 custom 'lifestyle apps' for Android and IOS, to address prevalent health issues within society. Get Fitter, Be Happier and Quit Smoking encourages people to take control of their personal well-being and lifestyle.

Our strategy was to work with experienced health practitioners (Doctors, Psychotherapists and fitness trainers) to create a series of apps which support, inform and guide users on their journey towards successfully achieving their lifestyle goals.

Be Happier:

Get Fitter:

Quit Smoking:

Alerts and notifications include calls to action and are structured to respond to compliance to the programme.

Users are assigned a unique member number that can be used throughout the suite of apps, allowing them to track their progress, personalise their account and interact with the online community. The long-term vision is to reward users with tangible benefits for using the app (such as vouchers, gym membership discounts or air miles) based on their interactions and progression within the apps.

Gamification including daily reporting, goal setting (with achievements), calendar (with achievements marked), checking in (for Quit Smoking), motivations, badges, personal best (competition against one's self), progression dynamics and personalisation are included in the app.

Results

HCF & WTB set out to create a suite of apps in an effort to encourage our community to make positive change and reach their goal of living a healthier lifestyle. In turn reducing the growing cost associated with the public and private health sector. As a result of being a not-for-profit, there was no paid media used in the promotion of the app and it was pushed to current customers only. All sign ups were a result of earned PR. Current unique users per app Get Fitter: 6,224, Be Happier: 4,878, Quit Smoking: 1,307. A total over 12,409 current active users are participating in the programs. HCF has advised us that the apps have been considered absolutely critical and instrumental in working with their clientele to create healthier and happier lives.
